Buckland Abbey.
"At a short distance from the banks of the Tavy,
and about one mile from the picturesque village of Buckland-Monachorum,
are the finely-situated remains of Buckland Abbey, which was founded in the year 1278,
by Ainicia, relict of Baldwin, Earl of Devonshire, for monks of the Cistercian order.
The site and immediate demesnes of the Abbey, were granted to Richard Grenville, "who built on it,"
says Risdon, "a fair new house;" which, with the estate, was afterwards purchased by the celebrated circumnavigator, Sir Francis Drake."
