Banqueting House.
"The Palace (Whitehall) had fallen into a dilapidated condition in the time of James I., and the King thought it desirable to rebuild it on a magnificent scale. For this purpose he secured the services of Inigo Jones, who, by the bye, was appointed Surveyor-General on October 1, 1613. The only part of the plan that was carried out, however, was the Banqueting House: a circumstance owing, it is stated, to the immense extravagance of the Court."
