Built
in Belfast in 1936 and launched there on St Patrick’s Day 1938 the cruiser was soon to see
wartime duty patrolling the northern waters as part of a
naval blockade of Germany. Later in the war she provided
protection for arctic convoys on route to Russia and
played a role in the D-Day landings.
HMS Belfast retired from service in 1963 and was opened
to the public in 1971 as part of the Imperial War
Museum.
