Montacute House was built
in the 1590s and it is a classic Elizabethan country house.
Montacute was built by Sir Edward Phelips who was a leading London lawyer at the time.
Phelips made the opening speech for the prosecution at the trial of Guy Fawkes
following the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
On display in the Long Gallery are some of the finest Tudor
and Elizabethan portraits from the National Portrait Gallery collection.
Montacute House is a National Trust property with free entry for National Trust members.
