Lincoln Castle
"During
the first year of his Kingship, William I. was so
convinced of the disaffection that pervaded the country,
that he directed four castles to be built in the land :
one at York, one at Hastings, another on the hill of
Nottingham, and coming to Lincoln from York, he fixed on
the crest of the hill, high over the town and its river,
as the site of another large and strong fortress to
dominate this important district."
