Rochester Castle
"London taverns and pleasure-gardens were more
to the liking of Samuel Pepys than the most romantic of ancient buildings, but there were occasions
when he turned aside for a moment to visit a venerable relic of the past. As witness this entry in
his copious diary: " To Rochester, to visit the old
Castle ruins, which hath been a noble place; but,
Lord! to see what a dreadful thing it is to look
upon the precipices, for it did fright me mightily.
The place hath been great and strong in former
ages." So Pepys wrote in 1665,"
