Portchester Castle
"On the northern shore
of what is now known as Portsmouth Harbour, at the extreme limit of a tongue of land that juts out
into the tidal basin, there stand in gloomy grandeur the imposing ruins of Portchester Castle.
The investing walls of Roman construction, covered here and there with ivy, enclose a square space of about
nine acres, and with the exception of Silchester, are the most extensive Roman remains in Hampshire.
From the north-west corner rises, some hundred feet in height, the mighty Norman keep."
