Balmoral.
"Balmoral, an old possession on Deeside of the Gordons,
and afterwards of the Farquharsons,
was purchased from the Earl of Fife in 1852 by the
Prince Consort. The fine Scottish baronial
castle, largely of the Prince's own planning, which
took the place of the ancient tower, was completed in 1856, and down almost to the close of her
life it was the autumn resort and "Highland
home" of Queen Victoria."
Extract from "The royal palaces, historic castles and stately homes of Great Britain" (Open Library)
Balmoral is open to the public on a limited basis. Visit the
Royal Residences website for additional details and to book tickets.
