Ashmolean Museum.
The Ashmolean is the
University of Oxford Museum of Art and Archaeology. Founded in 1683 it was Britain's first public museum.
Elias Ashmole was a founding member of the Royal Society
and donated much of his antiquarian collection, library,
and manuscripts to the University. Today the galleries
include Exploring the Past, Ancient World, Asian
Crossroads, West meets East and European Art 1800 to the
present day. The art collection includes works by
Turner, Sickert, Pissarro and the Pre-Raphaelites.
Following a major renovation the museum's world famous
Egyptian Galleries were opened to the public in November
2011.
