Eilean Donan Castle
"This castle was the old stronghold of the Earls of Ross, and afterwards became the possession of the Mackenzies of Seaforth. It was either built or strengthened in the reign of Alexander
II., as a check to the ravages of the Norse pirates, who were finding shelter in the Hebrides. In 1505, Earl Huntly, by order of the king, captured Strome Castle, on Loch Carron, and the castle of Eilean Donan. In 1539, Donald of Sleat, called Donald Gorme, or Donald of the Blue Eyes, who claimed to be Lord of the Isles, attacked Eilean Donan Castle in the absence of its owner, the Earl of Kintail; but the retainers of Kintail bravely defended the keep".
