"Seven miles south of Dumfries, where the
river Nith flows into the Solway Firth, stands the magnificent and ancient
Castle of Caerlaverock. It occupies a situation which must
have been very strong, being placed at the
edge of an extensive marsh, which surrounds
the castle on all sides except the north. About
the base of the castle walls runs a wide and
deep moat which is still full of water. Outside of this is a great earthen mound seventy
feet wide. The approach to the castle is from
the north, where it is joined by a drawbridge
to firm ground."
