"During the sanguinary struggle for Scottish independence,
the castle of Brodick was alternately held by the English
and Scotch. Immediately after the battle of Falkirk, an
adventurer from Ireland Thomas Bisset landed in Brodick
Bay with a large body of troops, took possession of the
Island, and received permission from Edward to retain it in
the name of England. In 1306, Sir John Hastings was
governor of the castle with his "squires and yeomanry"
".
