"Drum Castle is situated a short distance north of the river Dee, three or four miles below Crathes. It consists of a massive and ancient keep, to which has been added a seventeenth century mansion. The castle was probably built by William de Irvine, on whom the estate of Drum was conferred by Robert I." Extract from "The Castles and Keeps of Scotland" (Open Library)
